#19 BYU vs #10 UCLA

Week 3 of college football was a big day for college football, featuring four games of ranked teams playing against one another. One of these games was a showdown at the Rose Bowl between 19th-ranked BYU and 10th-ranked UCLA. Going into this game, BYU had two stunning last-second victories against their first two opponents, with one of them being in the top 20. UCLA had two nice blowout victories against their first two opponents. The Bruins were projected to win this game by 17 points (2 touchdowns and a field goal). The first half was a very ugly one, as UCLA freshman quarterback Josh Rosen had only 5 completed passes for 15 attempts and a whopping 3 interceptions: one on BYU's five-yard line, another one around midfield, and a third one in BYU's end zone, which could've been a UCLA touchdown. To make up for Rosen's poor performance, the Bruins' defense held their all against BYU's fast-paced offense. The halftime score was 10-3 with BYU leading. IF Rosen did not have two of those In UCLA's locker room, the coaches decided to give junior running back Paul Perkins more handoffs. Perkins was the only UCLA player in the first half to have made plays of more than ten yards multiple times. After a BYU punt early in the third quarter, UCLA senior wide receiver Devin Fuller caught and returned the ball all the way to BYU's 17-yard line. This ensued a 5-yard rushing touchdown scored by Paul Perkins to tie the game at 10-10. BYU responded as their freshman quarterback Tanner Mangum threw a touchdown pass to receiver Mitch Matthews to make the score 17-10. After BYU kicked a field goal early in the fourth quarter to make the score 20-10, Josh Rosen and the offense marched down the field. Josh Rosen then threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to UCLA senior wide receiver Jordan Payton. BYU kicked another field goal and the score became 23-17 BYU. Paul Perkins got tired in the fourth quarter as he had 26 carries for an amazing 219 yards. So the Bruins put in sophomore running back Nate Starks. Starks quickly put the offense to work and had consecutive rushes for 31 and 22 yards. The Bruins, back in the red zone, let Starks run the rest of the drive to eventually score a UCLA touchdown. This was UCLA's first lead of the game as the Bruins now led 24-23. Trying to come back up with another last-second victory on 4th down and 7 yards, Tanner Mangum rolled off to the side and threw the ball, only to be intercepted by UCLA junior linebacker Myles Jack, ending the game. UCLA survived against BYU, winning 24-23 in front of a crowd of 67,612 people. All of the Bruin fans were happy that night as UCLA's crosstown rival, then-6th-ranked USC lost to Stanford 41-31 on the same day. The 9th-ranked Bruins won't have it any easier in their next game, where UCLA travels to Tucson, Arizona to take on the 16th-ranked Arizona Wildcats, who may have All-American defensive lineman Scooby Wright playing for them. UCLA has lost three key defensive linemen: Eddie Vanderdoes, Fabian Moreau, and Myles Jack, who intercepted Tanner Mangum's final pass at the Rose Bowl. On the bright side, Bruins cornerback Ishmael Adams, who was initially arrested for theft, will be playing for UCLA once again. The Bruins are predicted to win by a field goal (3 points). Going into this game, both UCLA and Arizona are undefeated teams. One of them will suffer their first loss of the season. I really hope that UCLA does win this game as College Gameday will take place in Tucson. Go Bruins!
